Our Town

“Our Town” is our insiders’ look at the communities of New England. “Our Town” gives you the key, top-line facts and figures any home buyer needs to know.  But, just as importantly, “Our Town” will give you a sense about what statistics can’t tell you, but what you really need to know: what’s the character of the community?

For this personalized view, we ask our agents to share their “Five Faves” about the towns where they not only do business, but in which they live.  Our hope is that you may find some special tidbit on “Our Town” that could help make it your town.

This month’s "Our Town" takes a look at Winchester, MA. Winchester is located off Route 93 just 8 miles north of Boston and borders Medford, Arlington, Woburn, Stoneham and Lexington. Paul Mydelski of RE/MAX Leading Edge introduces us to Winchester.

Paul has been a top producing real estate professional throughout his more than 14 years in the industry. Receiving countless sales achievement awards and designations, he has held sales licenses in the states of MA, NH and FL.

1. What is the median price of a Single Family home?

$735,000

2. What is the public transportation system like?

The highlight is the commuter rail from North Station. There are two stops in town and 22 roundtrips during weekdays.

3. What is access to major highways?

Routes 2, 93, and 128 are all within 10 minutes of the border of Winchester, depending on what area of town you’re in.

4. How are the school systems in the area?

One of the strongest draws of Winchester is the school system, which consistently rates in the top 10 in MCAS. One of the elementary schools, Muraco Elementary, always rates in the top 5 in the state. Bottom line, the quality of the school system is often one of the reasons people live in Winchester.

5. Who is this area attractive to?

According to NAR, the average person moves every 6-7 years. It’s easily double that in Winchester. Young adults who have just started or are looking to start families find Winchester very appealing. People also raise their families and then stay as they downsize. We have a strong base of retirees, including a very active Jenks Senior Center.

6. Total population?

20,000 +

7. Average age of population?

41

Paul Mydelski’s Five Faves about Winchester:

1. Best Coffee Spot:

Starbucks, Winchester Center. They have outside seating during warmer weather. This is very much “the center of the center” of town.

2. Best Breakfast Spot:

Swanton Street Diner. It’s a little off the beaten path, outside of downtown. Neighborhood feel, great prices, great food, great services.

3. Best Italian Restaurant:

Café Dolce. Try the gorgonzola chicken pasta it is excellent!

4. Best Walk:

The Middlesex Fells is a fantastic 1200 acre recreation area with in the town boundaries with great for walking, hiking, running mountain biking and dog walking.

5. Best Pizza:

Joe’s Pizza. Joe’s is a family-owned Italian pizza. They do it all, from the basics to the more elaborate. They have great subs, too!
